Punk rock meets Magic: The Gathering - Planeswalker Punk
I am incredibly excited that my new album from Everything Sideways is out now. The eight-song album is really good punk rock: fast beats, driving guitars, and some cool vocal harmonies. This album, however, is a bit different than my previous music. Each song is about the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering.
It’s a game I played as a child and restarted playing a few years ago. But did I like it that much to make music about it? I did, and here’s why.
The idea came from the song I released previously in 2022 called Live and Let Pee, that was an ode to the ABDL community. The song quite viral with that group, so I asked myself, Is there another niche I could tap and go viral with them?
It turned out there was, the Magic community, 25 million worldwide. I hadn’t heard of any Magic-related music before, so I decided that I had an opportunity to make something I thought was truly unique.
And it’s now here: Planeswalker Punk
I started writing the Planeswalker Punk album in early summer and spent much of the summer putting the songs together and iterating each instrument’s parts. As I started to put the lyrics together, I wrote songs about various aspects of the game, some nostalgic songs about playing when I was a kid, and an ode to my friends who come over on Saturday nights to play.
The eight songs include:
1 vs. 3 (Commander), detailing the intensity of an commander game
Planeswalker Punk, an anthem for all Magic players who have ever felt ostracized for playing the game
Mox Pearl, a true story from my childhood when I bought an expensive card but traded it away. It’s now worth $3,000!
Everything Sideways, which pays homage to the players who like to go all out attacks and turn “everything sideways!”
The Magic Blues, a cheeky and silly song with a blues riff about playing blue in a Magic game.
Saturday Night Magic, an ode to my friends who come over regularly to crack some packs and drink some beers.
MagicFest (Mythic Champ), a song about playing at and trying to win a Magic tournament!
Simpler Times, a song inspired from a time I watched a father and son bond over Magic at a local game store.
As I put the songs together, I received a lot of positive feedback from other Magic players saying how much they liked the music. So, since I thought it might be good to promote the Planeswalker Punk album. I started reaching out to podcasts, Twitch streams, Twitter accounts and more. But I’m most proud of the two music videos I put toge
The first is for the song Saturday Night Magic, and features scenes of an actual Saturday Night Magic night at my house.
The second video is a lyric video that uses AI-generated images of the lyrics of the song as the visual component. I’m grateful to Matt Riddle who helped me build the images.
